ADRIAN DEANE LEADS A CAST OF 5 FROM DANVILLE TO NEW ROSS, IRELAND

Anna Christie1920

"I wanted to have the audience leave with a deep feeling of life flowing on, of the past which is never the past—but always the birth of the future.... It would have been so obvious and easy to have made my last act a tragic one.... It would not have been true. They would act in just the silly, immature compromising way that I have made them act... a bit tragically humorous in their vacillating weakness."

—O'Neill responding to critics

Lead actress Adrian Deane emphasized the protagonist's trajectory of self-discovery as central to themes and tone of the play.

"Anna is someone who is searching for perhaps the greatest thing someone can search for: more even than a father, another's love and a home where she belongs, Anna is searching for herself," Deane said. "At the end of this play she comes to know as if by better acquaintance that this 'Anna Christie' she used to call herself is an important part of her too -- someone she has grown from yes, but also someone who will always be a part of her and whom she will no longer hide or hide from."

The beloved Oscar-winning film comes to life onstage in this imagined story of how young Will Shakespeare is inspired by his muse — the feisty, brilliant and beautiful Viola — to write Romeo & Juliet, his romantic masterpiece. The Eugene O’Neill Foundation, Tao House is proud to announce it will kick off 2022 with a production of O’Neill’s play Welded. Idealism, insecurities, and intrigues send the marriage of successful theatre couple Michael and Eleanor Cape spinning out of control in this rarely produced 1924 play. Welded comes from O’Neill’s highly experimental period. In his stage directions, he wrote that Michael and Eleanor should be illuminated by individual spotlights which O’Neill referred to as “auras of egoism.” This provocative stage direction was not followed in the original production nor subsequent productions. January’s production will seek to explore this lighting device and its ramifications on the other characters in the play and the audience.

The characters of Eugene O’Neill’s plays come to life in this series of short films celebrating the words of O’Neill, the history of Tao House and the natural beauty of the surrounding Las Trampas Regional Wilderness. Eugene O’Neill and his imagination lived at Tao House from 1937-1944. O’Neill’s characters sprang from his imagination, so his characters lived with him at Tao House as well. Maybe they never left…
